The Fancheng back-to-back converter station project has a rated DC voltage of ±100 kV and a rated transmission power of 600,000 kilowatts.
It is designed using Chinese DC transmission standards and technology. More than 90% of the equipment is made in China. It is a highlight
project of the State Grid’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Mohammad Chakar, chief engineer of the Van back-to-back converter station, said that this is the first back-to-back converter station in Turkey
and is of great significance to Turkey. The project not only contributes to the power interconnection between Turkey and neighboring countries,
but also the back-to-back technology can effectively block the impact of faulty power grids on the normal power grids of interconnected parties,
ensuring the security of Turkey’s power grid to the greatest extent.
Chakar said that with the help and guidance of Chinese friends, they gradually mastered high-voltage direct current transmission technology.
For two years, this place became like a big family. Chinese engineers really helped us. From the early stages of construction to post-maintenance,
they were always there to support us and solve our problems. He said.
On November 1, 2022, the Fancheng converter station project successfully completed its 28-day trial operation
This year, Chakar brought his family from Izmir in western Turkey to settle in Van. As one of the first high-voltage direct current transmission
technicians in Turkey, he is full of hope for his future development. This program changed my life and the techniques I learned here will serve
me well throughout my life.
Mustafa Olhan, engineer of the Fancheng back-to-back converter station, said that he has worked at the Fancheng back-to-back converter station
for two years and has been exposed to a lot of new equipment and knowledge. He also sees professionalism and rigor from Chinese engineers.
We learned a lot from Chinese engineers and formed deep friendships. Because of their help, we can operate the system better. Orhan said.
Yan Feng, general representative of the State Grid China Electric Equipment Middle East Representative Office, said that as Turkey’s first high-voltage
DC project, 90% of the equipment of the project is made in China, and the operation and maintenance adopt Chinese technology and standards,
which effectively promotes the high-end power development of China and Turkey. Project cooperation in the technical field will drive Chinese
equipment, technology and standards to go global and create new breakthroughs in overseas high-end markets.
Over the past ten years, many Chinese companies have actively responded to the initiative and gone abroad to assist the infrastructure construction
of countries along the Belt and Road, making positive contributions to developing economies, increasing employment, and improving people’s
livelihood in various countries.
