State Grid Corporation of China Acquires Partial Stake in Crete DC Interconnection Project

Recently, State Grid Corporation of China (SGC) signed an equity purchase agreement with State Grid Corporation of

Greece (SGC), which will acquire 20% of the equity of Crete DC Interconnection Project Company in Greece.
The Greek Crete DC Networking Project is currently the highest voltage level of the flexible DC networking project of the

island of the sea cable, and is also the world’s top three ocean depths of the sea cable project, the voltage level of ± 500 kV,

the length of 380 kilometers. The project is expected to be put into operation in June 2025, when it will realize the strong

networking between Crete, the first Greek island, and the European continent, and become the main channel for networking

between Greece and neighboring countries, which is of great significance for Greece to build an energy hub in Southeast Europe.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece, Mr. Evaliotis, said at the signing ceremony that the

project can improve the level of safe and stable power supply in Greece, and he looked forward to further exerting their

respective advantages with the Chinese side, and injecting new impetus into deepening the pragmatic cooperation between

the two countries. Chinese Ambassador to Greece Mr. Fang Thu said that China and Greece are peers and participants in the

high-quality joint construction of the “Belt and Road”, and the signing of this project is another new achievement of mutual

benefit and win-win situation between China and Greece.
In November 2019, under the joint witness of the leaders of China and Greece, State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and State

Grid Corporation of Greece (SGG) signed an agreement of intent on equity investment in the Crete DC interconnection project.

This year, State Grid Corporation of China became the preferred partner of the National Grid of Greece through open bidding

in the market.
